A Walk Around Washington DC (part 2) Mar 23, 2011 Picking up from where I left off last time, I was at the far eastern side of the US Capitol. From there I walked directly across the street to the Supreme Court. The sun was getting high, so the colors started to blot out a bit. I walked under the canopy to grab some shots from the inside so I could point the camera away from the sun. The view of the Capitol from the steps of the Supreme Court ...
A Walk Around Washington DC (part 1) Mar 21, 2011 With Kristin and Layla visiting relatives I had the rare opportunity of exploring DC on my own. After scarfing down a quick breakfast and walking the dog, I hit the road and arrived in the heart of DC at about 10 AM. Fortunately for me the day came with a cold breeze, keeping away many of the tourists that usually clog the mall at this time of year; the metro had ample seating, the mall proper wasn’t very crowded, and I had decent cloud cover for some good photos. ...
Mom's Apple Pie Company Mar 19, 2011 On the weekends I love to walk around Leesburg. It’s about 30 minutes from my home, and it has just the right blend of local shops, antique stores, and walkability to make a great day out. One of the places I enjoy visiting the most is Mom’s Apple Pie Company. Situated at the branching of Route 7 and Loudoun streets, I consider it the opening gateway to Old Town Leesburg: ...
A Lone Handprint in RTC Mar 14, 2011 I often take walks around the entirety of Reston Town Center during my lunch breaks. On one such break I noticed something opposite Reston Town Square Park: a lone handprint on the wooden enclosure surrounding the construction area. I thought it was so unique because there was only one and the art festival from which it came (as a handpainting exhibit was situated right in that same area) happened months earlier. ...
Snowshoe Sunset Mar 05, 2011 On one of the more horrible days of my life, such a beautiful sunset. Rest in peace, Andrea Teodosio.
Lessons Learned From 2010's Hikes Feb 26, 2011 I hike often when the weather permits. Despite all of my experience in the woods I still screw up often out there. Here are my things to improve upon in 2011, learned the hard way from mistakes made in 2010. If the temperature is going to be around 50F at night I don’t need to bring the 10 degree bag. The 45 degree bag and some extra clothes will do just fine. ...
A Mural In Herndon Feb 25, 2011 Kristin and I were walking around town looking for used wagons for Amy’s wedding in the thrift and antique stores around Herndon, VA. We were going to stop at a bread place first for some of their pastries and coffee, but unfortunately they were closed. Turning around from the storefront of the bread shop I saw a mural that I haven’t noticed before: Not only was this thing on the wall, but on the pavement of the parking lot as well. ...
Dog in Purse Feb 25, 2011 You never know what you’re going to see walking around Reston Town Center: For a second there I thought I’d been transported to L.A., but then I saw the fountain and recovered my senses.
The Escapist Hershey Kiss Feb 25, 2011 Kristin and I get bags of chocolate to satisfy our need for sweets. We find that if we get the bags with little self-contained pieces in it that we won’t gorge ourselves as bad as when we have an open bag or batch of cookies. This past week I got some Hershey’s Kisses to fill that need. As I reached into the bag I pulled out something unique: What, is this guy trying to use his wrapping as a rope to get out of the bag? ...
Memorial Day Hike 2010 Feb 24, 2011 When I was cleaning out some stuff in my basement office I stumbled upon one of my old notebooks. In it were my notes jotted after a Memorial Day Hike in 2010. During that hike a group of friends and I went from Big Meadows Wayside to the 4-H pool on the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park. Here’s the breakdown. Day Zero: Big Meadows Wayside to North Skyland Service Road (9 miles) I arrive alone in my car after driving through some annoying construction projects that are going on along Skyline Drive. ...
