I’m a big fan of Last.fm. For those not aware, it is a music recommendation service. It does its recommendations based on your own listening patterns; it watches the tracks you play on your computer and compares it to those played by other people sharing common artists. As an example, Last.fm recommends that I check out the band Catch 22 (who I do not have in my music library) based on the number of times I’ve played songs by Less Than Jake and because other people who have listened to Less Than Jake listen to Catch 22.

The Scenario Let's suppose you are modeling a database in MySQL 5.5. Based on your knowledge of the requirements for the application behind this database you can guess which of the tables within it are going to be huge. For those huge tables you want to plan ahead to make sure that you can scale out your data such that you have less headaches in the future. Here's the catch: you want to keep it simple until it comes time to scale out.

Backing up the Acer Revo 3700

In my previous post I told you about my Acer Aspire Revo 3700 - awesome things come in small packages! Unfortunately, as great as the overall package is the default operating system included was Windows 7. That’s a definite no-go, as I’m not a fan of anything coming out of Microsoft. Obviously that had to go! Being the practical person I am, I didn’t want to blow the Windows software completely away.

Acer Aspire Revo 3700 - unboxing

My old HTPC is something that I call a “frankencomputer,” meaning it’s been upgraded in piecemeal fashion after various OEM parts failed over the years. It may look totally new, but inside it is the same limiting, loud hardware that I started off with circa 2003. I needed some new hotness, so I started looking for something with the following criteria:
Small form factor - it had to fit into an entertainment center and look good.

Grandpa's Garage

Grandpa's Garage
Over Thanksgiving holiday I got the chance to briefly hang out at my grandmother’s house on Long Island. It felt great to have no work obligations and to just take in the house with the family. One thing I especially like to do when I’m there is to wander around my grandfather’s garage.
Grandpa died seven years ago this month, but his spirit still resides in that garage.

New York Thanksgiving

When the family and I were in New York for Thanksgiving we stayed at our cousin’s place in Long Beach. I got a little antsy there because I hadn’t taken any pictures in a while, so I walked over to the banks of the Long Island Sound to take a few pictures of the water and sky as the sun was going down. I found a gorgeous scene waiting for me!

Xonotic Movement Tutorial

I recently participated in the making of the Xonotic Movement Tutorial - I provided the voice acting for the English version. In this tutorial video (shown below) both new and old players can learn tips and tricks on moving around in the new version of the game.
Being that the physics have changed considerably, many thought the "depth" to movement disappeared; that the movement in the game was too easy. This is simply not true!

As I look down at my desktop calendar, I’m completely surprised that it’s the end of November already. Time truly does fly when you’re having fun, and apparently even more so when you are having fun with an infant!
Kristin doesn’t welcome the upcoming winter season, but I certainly do. The different season really gives the days a new feel for me, given that it is dark when I leave for work and when I come home.
