San Francisco Day 2 - Monterey and Back

After having lunch in Santa Cruz and nabbing a cool t-shirt from one of the beach stores, we packed up and continued on our journey to Monterey. Once we arrived we parked and went straight to the aquarium, which was the main reason we were there. Although it was a a weekday that aquarium was incredibly crowded with visitors, and for good reason – the aquarium is amazing! The jellyfish exhibit I particularly liked.

San Francisco Day 2 - Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Cruz

Taking advantage of the time differences between Virginia and California, Kristin and I were able to get out of the hotel very early on Monday morning. Our goal was loosely to drive down to Monterey via the fabled Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1). After stumbling a bit on the directions and stopping for gas and coffee we were on our way.
We didn’t hit much resistance in the form of traffic, as we were apparently going in the reverse direction compared with the commuters.

San Francisco Day 1

After over a year without a vacation, Kristin and I set off towards the opposite coast with San Francisco as our destination. Having first dropped off Layla and Sandie with my mom the day before, we were both feeling a bit lonely and unaware of what to do with all of the extra time on our hands. We decided to make use of it by fine-tuning our backpacks and thinking about things to do once we touched down.

Second Brew Coming Soon

The second batch of beer is well on its way! This time around I’m brewing an amber called Autumn Amber Ale, which can be found at Midwest Supplies. Unlike my previous one (a hefeweizen), for this batch I will be doing two stage fermentation; I will leave the mix in my plastic bucket for a week, then transfer it to a glass carboy for another week. Hopefully this will give me a clear and consistent brew since a lot of the sediment is excluded during the transfer.

July 4th at Lake Anna

For the second year in a row the Zucaro family packed up for Lake Anna for a weekend on the water. The weather was fantastic and the water temperature wasn’t too bad. We enjoyed ourselves and the company we were with, and also did our fair share of chasing Layla around - she was much more mobile this time (she was only a few months old last year)!

One thing I love about Kristin is her propensity to bury herself in good novels. Here I’ve caught her in the act back in 2007. She’s still the same today: her nose in a book but nevertheless aware of her mischievous husband with the camera!

Lilies in the Garden

We have some lilies in the garden that we never actually planted. Not that we’re complaining! After removing some evil barberry bushes, these guys appeared the next spring as a pleasant surprise. I’m doing my best to keep them alive and healthy. Here’s some pictures of them just after I watered the garden this morning.

When I was driving home today the temperature gauge in the car read 101. 101 degrees! That’s fricking hot. It ALMOST makes me wish for winter. Looking through my old images I found this one. It’s a leaf that got caught upright between the planks of my deck in Bethesda. I want that atmosphere right now, but only on demand; I don’t want the dreariness and self-imposed seclusion that often comes along with the cold weather.
