Dog Tag Memorial, Boston
Aug 27, 2011
This is a memorial to soldiers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is made out of dog tags that sway in the wind, reflecting the sunlight in all directions.

Sunset at Claude Moore Park
Aug 24, 2011
The clouds were unlike any I’d seen recently the other night at Claude Moore. I rushed over to the lakes to get some images of those deep colors. I love the symmetry! The arc of the clouds matches the curvature of the lake itself.

Great Falls Park
Aug 21, 2011
The weather was nice on Friday so Kristin and I took the day off. We had an all-day date out at Great Falls Park. Instead of going in through the park entrance we decided instead to hike in via the Difficult Run trail which is located just to the south and east of the park proper.
It rained on Thursday, so the trail was a bit muddy and the run (stream?

A trip to Middleburg
Aug 14, 2011
Today we were pleasantly surprised to see the sun peeking out from behind the haze, turning the day beautiful. For the first time in a long while the clouds were out in force and I wanted to take advantage. We went to Middleburg to walk around.
We hid from the blazingly hot sun by exploring well organized antique shops and fashion stores. We also stopped in a fresh goods store that had a bunch of local produce and meat.

Heritage Farm in HDR
Aug 14, 2011
I went out yesterday morning to test out my new camera. The light didn’t cooperate (it was a hazy, drab morning) so I made one of the shots into an HDR.
This is on Heritage Farm, which is located adjacent to Claude Moore Recreation Center. This was taken really early in the morning, so there were no visitors around. I’ll have to revisit this scene if I ever see some epic clouds in the area.

Algonkian Park
Aug 11, 2011
This is Algonkian Park, which is located just north of my home here in Sterling, VA. On two separate occasions I visited with the intent of creating some high dynamic range (HDR) pictures and these are the result. Unfortunately the software I use (qtpfsgui - what a name!) doesn’t do very well in terms of noise levels, so these can’t be blown up very big without first going through a lot of post-processing effort.

The US Capitol in HDR
Aug 07, 2011
This is the US Capitol as seen in HDR. I’ve posted this pic before, but that was just the raw image. Tonight I thought I’d take a break from the San Francisco pics and post something out of the ordinary. I’ve been following Trey Ratcliff’s stuff, and that gave me the idea to try the HDR concept. More than just that, I threw in some panoramic stuff in for fun.

San Francisco Day 4 - Point Reyes National Seashore
Aug 05, 2011
Day four was indeed a big day, as anticipated. We stocked up on some complimentary breakfast at the hotel and were out the door around 8 in the morning, heading North to <a href=”http://www.nps.gov/pore/index.htm” title=”NPS Homepage of Point Reyes”>Point Reyes National Seashore. I tried not to look up at the sky too much – it was exceedingly foggy and there was little to no visibility beyond what was just in front of us.

San Francisco Day 3 - Berkeley Castro District
Aug 02, 2011
Day three, Tuesday, was one where Kristin and I didn’t want to do much on foot. We’d spent the entire previous day wandering all about three separate towns and all sorts of beach overlooks. Our feet were sore and we’d accumulated more than a little bit of sunburn. Instead of doing the same thing we decided to head to Berkeley to see the campus of the University of California.
Berkeley is a place of legend for a unix geek like me since it is where the Berkeley Software Distribution was created.
