Harper's Ferry

Since we didn’t get the chance to go to Harper’s Ferry last week, the family and I went this past Saturday. We set our course to West Virginia via VA Rt. 15 North after stopping at a local farmer’s market (mmm, fresh eggplant!). The weather was perfect when we got there, and the teeny town was bustling with people. Even though most of them were tourists, it was still nice to grab a day outside with the family amongst the general commotion - we strapped Layla onto our chest carrier and walked around the town for about 3 hours.

Enabling ClearType on Windows XP Pro

Until recently I hadn’t noticed the poor state of affairs in font rendering for XP (at least by default). I began to notice when I was implementing a new font for this website - the site just looked weird when viewed in XP. No matter which browser I tried (IE, Firefox, and Chrome), the body text ended up looking both blocky and blurred at the same time! It was obviously something OS-specific, otherwise I would have seen different behavior when I switched browsers (or it would look equally horrible in both Linux and Windows), but what was it?

Here are the panoramas that I mentioned yesterday. They were all assembled from multiple photos of the given location, then stitched together using software (about which I’ll have to write a post). Click on the images to see a bigger version.
First up is one of the main buildings of Shepherd University. Situated right near the downtown area of Shepherdstown, it attracted all manner of people and dogs. Very cool!
